CALICO

CALICO (Care and Living in Community) is a three-year project of UIA (Urban Innovative Actions) in Brussels, developed from the intersection of three societal challenges. The project consists of 34 apartments in cohabitation. It combines different generations and people with different backgrounds and is therefore a diverse community. The aim of this project was to improve affordable quality housing.

The project was developed in response to three challenges that the founders of this project identified. The starting point was the housing crisis in the Brussels Capital Region. The second challenge was the housing situation and quality of life of vulnerable groups. The final challenge was the paradigm shift in which care for people in need becomes less institutionalized and becomes more a responsibility of civic society.

The main goal of this project was to improve the affordability and quality of housing situations for vulnerable groups. Linked to this, CALICO also wanted to increase their quality of life and sense of well-being.

In addition, this project wants to be a source of inspiration for professional care organizations with the concept of community care and hopes to see more similar projects emerge in the Brussels Capital Region in the future.

Tesserae is connected to this project through its co-founder Laura Colini. She is theUIA-expert in charge of providing expertise and reporting.
